My Current Favorite Trader Joe's Products
Trader Joe's is my main man. If I had a celebrity crush that could be a store, it'd be Trader Joe's. If you don't know what Trader Joe's is, it's a grocery store chain in the U.S. that specializes in low prices for usually high priced products.
Many times when I'm looking at a specific product at Whole Foods that costs more than I'm willing to pay, I'll try to find it at Trader Joe's - and more often than not I can find it there for half the price!
Trader Joe's has been a lifesaver for my bank account. I spend more on groceries than the average person because I need to test a recipe before I can finalize it, shoot it, and write it to post on i am rorie. Their prices are everyday affordable and the produce is good quality. I've never bought anything that was rotten or expired, and their bagged produce - such as spinach - is always fresh.
By now you get the point that I love Trader Joe's. But I wanted to share some of my favorite specific items with in case you've yet to try them yourself. They're always adding new products, which is why I've limited this to my "current" favorites!
1. Red Split Lentils
If you saw my One Pot Red Lentil Curry post from earlier this week, you won't be surprised this is my current number one favorite. Lentils are such an easy way to incorporate protein into your diet and they're fast cooking, too. Add them to soups, stews, or make them the main focus like in my lentil curry!
2. Nutritional Yeast
Believe it or not, I don't use nutritional yeast that often - at least for a vegan. But I do still love it! And I love even more that Trader Joe's has this for a reasonable price ($3.99 I believe!) so for someone like me who isn't always reaching for it, it's a good deal!
3. Canned Goods
So this one I'm kind of combining a lot of things, but Trader Joe's really is great for canned and other non perishable items. Some of my favorite items to pick up in the canned section are the black beans, pasta (only 99 cents!), coconut milk, and garbanzo beans. You pay generic brand price for high quality especially in this aisle. I use their garbanzo beans in my Buffalo Chicken Salad with Homemade Ranch as an animal protein substitute!
4. Sun-Dried Tomatoes
If you're salad or pasta sauce needs a little extra flavor burst, add a handful of these babies! Sun-dried tomatoes are the epitome of sweet and savory and will keep for a long time so you don't have to re-purchase often! I use these in my Creamy Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta, perfect chilled or heated up!
5. Raspberry Preserves
Words cannot properly describe how much I love these preserves. They're not joking when they say fresh. This is the best balance of sweet and tart. I love topping my Protein Packed Chocolate Oatmeal with a dollop with this stuff!
6. Whole Grain Rolled Oats
Another pantry staple I always keep stocked are Trader Joe's rolled oats. You get 32 oz. for under $4 I believe, which is an amazing deal! I use it in the oatmeal recipe I mentioned above or for making my Energizing Chocolate Granola.
7. Kentucky Bourbon BBQ Sauce
It can be difficult to find a vegan barbecue sauce as many contain Worcestershire sauce (which contains fish oil!). But have no fear, Trader Joe's has a variety of BBQ sauces in their stores and a few are vegan friendly. I love to use this one for my BBQ Portobello Mushroom Burgers as a marinade or a sauce.
8. Vegan Spread & Dressing
Although TJ's doesn't explicitly call this mayonnaise, it's the closes thing to vegan mayo you'll find there, and honestly it's my favorite out of all other vegan mayos out there. As the label states, it's perfect for creamy dressings, like in the Creamy Sun-Dried Tomato Pasta I mentioned above.
9. Ginger Stir-In Paste
I'm sure this existed before I first saw it at Trader Joe's, but this item has been a real game changer for my salad dressings. It's very strong in flavor and scent, so a little goes a long way, lasting a long time for a one-time purchase! I use this in my Roasted Cabbage Salad with Maple Ginger Dressing.
10. Raw Shelled Hemp Seeds
This is another one of those products where I couldn't believe how affordable it was. I see hemp seeds at Whole Foods for almost $10 a bag, but TJ's retails for about $5. If you want to keep them fresh for longer, I recommend storing them in the freezer. I like to top my oatmeal, salads, and smoothies with hemp seeds for extra protein. Occasionally I'll add them to my Super Green Detox Smoothie for additional nutrition.
11. Mini Marshmallows
The star in all of this post are these adorable (vegan!) mini marshmallows! Another big challenge in the world of veganism besides finding vegan BBQ sauce is find vegan marshmallows. Luckily, TJ's keeps these in mini and full sized form throughout the year satisfy your s'mores craving in the summer and hot cocoa itching in the winter. I top my Spiked Mint Hot Cocoa with these bad boys on the regular!
These are all my winter 2017/2018 current favorites at Trader Joe's but there are plenty of others I keep in stock year round! Do you have any Trader Joe's favorites I haven't mentioned? Leave the product name in the comment section below so I can check them out!
