Orange Cranberry Ginger Smoothie

Now that winter is in full swing, it's inevitable that I'll soon catch my annual death-gripping cold. Anyone else experience these kinds of chronic illnesses each chilly season?

Over the years, I've learned how to combat nasty colds or at least keep them at bay by eating certain foods. We all know eating healthy can be an extremely successful preventive measure, but the specific types of healthy foods can make a huge difference. 

When I feel a cold coming on, I make this Orange Cranberry Ginger Smoothie. The Vitamin C in oranges is integral to helping fight off any type of sickness, but did you know cranberries are a Vitamin C jackpot, as well? Combine these two and you get a powerhouse of immune boosting goodness (insert flexing emoji here).

Cranberries and their juice are also useful for your urinary tract health (and treating infections) plus decreasing blood pressure. These red jewels aren't just for Thanksgiving, people!

Smoothies are great when you don't want to put in much effort to get something delicious in return. Peel your orange and ginger, maybe cut your cranberries in half if you want, throw 'em in a blender and enjoy. It's that simple.

Smoothies and juices are also great for getting extra fiber in your diet. Everyone is always so concerned with protein but fiber tends to get put on the back burner of nutritional values' hierarchy. Don't neglect your fiber intake!

The ginger will also be helpful for any bloating, pain or inflammation, and flu/cold prevention in the case that you're making this as a preventative measure. Ingredients

  • 2 oranges, peeled  & quartered (can juice instead if you don't like pulp, but will need 1 cup of juice total)
  • 1/2" knob of ginger, peeled
  • 1/2 cup frozen cranberries
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  1. Add the peeled orange quarters (or 1 cup of juice), peeled ginger, frozen cranberries, and water to a blender. Hit puree and enjoy!
